A large abstract canvas to paint yourself

Reference tutorialAnthony ChambaudSee the tutorial →A large abstract canvas is expensive in shops, yet it's one of the most freeing DIYs: no drawing, no rules, just matching colours and texture. And the result is necessarily unique. On each diagram below, the highlighted zone shows the current step.
What you need

- A stretched canvas (large, ~€15)
- Acrylic paint (3-4 matching tones)
- A palette knife + 1-2 wide brushes
- A palette (or plate) + cloth
- Optionally modelling/texture paste
Step by step
Prep the base
Set the canvas on an easel or flat, protect the floor. Choose a palette of 3-4 matching tones (e.g. cream, terracotta, ochre, a dark). First apply a uniform light base with a wide brush to unify the canvas.

Block in the shapes
Place the large colour areas, without trying to make it 'pretty': simple, asymmetric shapes. Work light to dark. Abstract forgives everything, let go and keep some breathing zones (empty space).

Add contrast and texture
With the knife, add a few raised touches and darker or lighter accents to create depth. Texture is what takes the canvas from 'Sunday painting' to a piece with character. Don't overdo it.

Let dry and hang
Let it dry flat (acrylic dries fast but the texture more slowly). Step back regularly to judge the whole. Once dry, hang it: above a sofa or console, a large canvas grounds the whole room.

The detail that changes everything
The secret to a good abstract isn't talent, it's the palette: 3-4 tones that go together (pull them from your decor) and empty space to breathe. A crowded, clashing canvas looks 'failed'; a restrained, harmonious one looks 'gallery'.
Where does it look best?
Above a sofa, a bed or a console. Go big: one large canvas has more impact than three small ones. Match the colours to your room (terracotta, ochre, cream for a warm interior) so it fits in.
