A nice plant stand literally lifts your plants and gives them the presence of a real decor object. This one is built from a few battens, in two hours, for the price of a garden-centre pot. On each diagram below, the highlighted zone shows the current step.

What you need

Materials
  • 4 wooden battens (legs), ~40-45 cm
  • Short battens for the pot support cross-bars
  • Wood glue + fine screws
  • Sandpaper + oil or stain
  • Square, tape measure, saw, drill-driver
  • A planter that sits in the support

Step by step

1

Cut the legs and cross-bars

Cut 4 legs to the same length and the short cross-bars that will hold the pot. Measure your planter's diameter to size the opening: the pot should rest inside without falling through. Sand all edges.

2

Assemble the legs in an X

Assemble the legs in pairs (crossed X-shape or straight, to taste), glued and screwed. Use a square to check the whole thing is stable and plumb: this is when the stand takes shape.

3

Fit the pot support

Fix the cross-bars at the top to form the cradle that will hold the planter. Do a dry test with the pot before final screwing: it should sit snugly, neither too loose nor jammed.

Oil it and add the plant

Apply an oil or stain to protect the wood and reveal its grain. Once dry, drop in the planter and your plant. Pick trailing foliage (pothos, spider plant) for an instant, more decorative cascade effect.

The detail that changes everything

Size the opening to your planter, not the other way round. A stand built to fit the pot looks intentional and pro; a pot that wobbles or jams ruins the whole effect.

Where does it look best?

In an empty living-room corner, beside a sofa, or in front of a bright window. Raised wood brings height and natural material. Trailing foliage above a slim leg creates a lovely contrast, very on-trend urban jungle.
