Light a living room right (without relying on the ceiling light)

By BairodJune 29, 2026

A poorly lit room feels smaller, colder, less welcoming, whatever the decor. The good news: lighting is one of the fastest and most dramatic changes. The golden rule is one word: multiply.

Drop the single ceiling light

One light source on the ceiling flattens everything: hard shadows, office mood. Designers aim for at least three sources per room, at different heights. That's what creates depth and warmth.

Several low, warm sources create pools of light and depth.

Think in three layers

Ambient light (diffuse, to move around), task light (reading lamp), and mood light (low lamps, candles). Layer all three and you can tune the room to the time of day.

Go warm: 2700K

Colour temperature changes everything. For a living room, stay around 2700K (warm white): that's the light that makes a room cosy. Cool white (4000K+) belongs over a worktop, not the sofa.

Multiply the low points

Table lamps, a floor lamp, sconces: sources at eye level or lower create warm pools of light. The more small points, the bigger and more lived-in the room feels.

Two warm sconces are enough to warm up a wall in the evening.

Add dimmers

A dimmer (or smart bulbs) turns one light into several moods. Being able to lower the intensity in the evening is the detail that takes a room from 'lit' to 'cosy'.

A well-lit living room is never one big light, but several small, warm, adjustable ones. Add a table lamp tonight, and watch the room change.
