Create a cosy reading nook (even in a small space)

By BairodJune 29, 2026

A reading nook isn't a chair dropped at random: it's a little cocoon designed to make you want to stay. It fits in a corner, under a window, at the end of a hallway. Here are the ingredients.

An enveloping seat

The heart of the nook is a comfortable chair you can curl up in: high back, armrests, or a wide low chair like a den. More than style, aim for real comfort: you should be able to read for an hour without shifting.

Use daylight

A window, a sill, a bench seat: natural light is reading's number-one ally. Set the seat at an angle to the window to avoid glare, and keep the view clear.

Warm light for the evening

To read after dark you need a dedicated, warm, adjustable source: a reading lamp, a side lamp, a sconce. Never the ceiling light alone, which tires the eyes and kills the mood.

Everything within reach

A small surface (side table, stool) for a cup and the current stack of books, plus a basket or low shelf. The secret to a nook you return to: never having to get up.

Textiles make the cocoon

A chunky-knit throw, one or two cushions, a small rug underfoot: that's what turns a chair into a refuge. Lean into soft textures and warm tones.

A good reading nook comes down to four things: a comfortable seat, light, a surface within reach, and textiles. Start by moving your best chair near a window, and test it.
